Elvis impersonator makes third bid to win Ontario seat

Dorian Baxter is an Elvis impersonator, an Anglican preacher and a Canadian federal election candidate - it's that simple.

Baxter is making his third bid to enter federal politics in Newmarket-Aurora, the Ontario riding held by Belinda Stronach since 2004.

"In terms of electing an Elvis impersonator into the House of Commons, I have to remind people, Elvis has not left the building. He wants to get into the building - the Parliament building."

The article also states:

"While Baxter is no longer wearing colourful Elvis jumpsuits as he campaigns door to door - he did so in 2004 - he still has the tell-tale pork-chop sideburns Presley sported in Las Vegas during the '70s.

The race four years ago also saw Baxter comb his hair into an Elvis pompadour and incorporate election-themed songs inspired by the King.

Baxter has literally changed his tune this time around."

The Fish That Looks Like Elvis!

This is an unusual story - whoever thought another species could look like the King?

This Mail On-line story says "there’s a whole world of Elvis impersonators. Yet few can be found below the ocean’s surface.

But with the same pouting lips, deep soulful eyes and, of course, the trademark quiff  this denizen of the deep is an uncanny lookalike of the rock and roll icon."

I wonder how this story came to be - was the Daily Mail reporter just browsing a fish magazine when he spotted the resemblance?

See what you think..

Dinner, tribute to Elvis at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park on Oct. 18 with Ted McMullen

This sounds good - it caught my eye... the article says..

"Ladies and gentlemen, if it’s Elvis you love, it’s Elvis you’ll get Oct. 18 at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park when "Elvis" will be in the building for dinner and a Vegas-style show."

Apparently the show lasts for about  three hours and features Elvis in three stages of his life - they reckon it will sell out quickly..

Found footage is basis of festival - Elvis impersonator and all..

Prueher and Pickett host a Found Footage each year. The Found Footage Festival, founded in New York in 2004, has been shown throughout the United States and Canada. While some people like to collect vinyl, these guys sit through thousands of "mostly excruciating hours"" watching videos to edit together about an hour of so of "hilarious and bewildering bits of vid".

I had to include today's story because guess what's in the mix..

“We found a video at a Salvation Army store last year made by an Elvis impersonator on how to be a better Elvis impersonator".

Fifth Annual Porthcawl Elvis Festival Best Ever!

Thousands of visitors from all over the UK, Europe, the USA and Canada stampeded Bridgend for the Fifth Annual Elvis Festival recently. This story says..

"The first 'Elvis' I spot is at Bridgend railway station. He's sporting a shabby black jumpsuit slashed to the waist and a matted quiff, and is standing outside the ticket office drinking Special Brew, chain-smoking and muttering obscenities into his mobile phone.

The next - sleek and dark and dapper in a crisp GI uniform - is chatting politely to a couple of pensioners in a petrol station forecourt.

Ten minutes later, as we drive into Porthcawl, they're everywhere. Thin Elvises, fat Elvises, Hawaiian Elvises, knackered-looking Elvises, swarthy Elvises, bickering Elvises . . . all hurrying along the seafront towards the Seabank Hotel and a big, wobbly-lettered sign that reads: 'Elvis is Here! September 26-28."

As usual we discover the hotels were fully booked and the  Brentwood Hotel changed its name to the Heartbreak Hotel in honour of the festival. Hot on the heels of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in Memphis, ,this is said to be the largest of its kind in Europe.

It is reported that the organizer believes that this is the biggest to date.

I may be biased but I do believe this phenomena is growing and growing year by year. Would love to hear why you think this is so?

Klush performs at Bolton Arena on August 9

Elvis impersonator Shawn Klush, or tribute artist as he and many prefer to be called has really made a mighty favorable impression on this journalist who thinks he's the nearest thing to Elvis himself. It's quite an interesting piece if you car t have a look.

An excerpt from the article says:

"His big win on the BBC's hunt for the best Elvis last year whipped up excited talk that the 38-year-old is the nearest thing you'll ever get to The King himself.

You can judge for yourself when he performs at the World's Greatest Elvis Concert at Bolton Arena on August 9 supported by Elvis's backing band, The Sweet Inspirations, plus 24-piece orchestra.

The concert is a first for the Arena and will feature four ETAs: Shawn will cover the Aloha From Hawaii and Vegas periods, while Rossendale-born Steve Preston sings the Vegas Rehearsal songs, Gordon Hendricks performs the 68 Comeback Special hits and Justin Shandor is young Elvis."

UK's most successful Elvis Presley impersonator - LEE 'Memphis’ King

Lee "Memphis"King was the British finalist in The World's Greatest Elvis competition and has previously been voted the number one Elvis tribute at Canada's Collingwood Festival. He's in concert this Sunday in Liverpool, England.

But poor Lee's whole interview seems to focus on the King's diet rather than Lee's talent. Here's an excerpt.. interesting approach:

“One thing is for sure, although I try and imitate Elvis Presley in as much detail as I possibly can, I don't follow his diet. I try to follow a healthy lifestyle and work out a lot, even when I am on tour.

Elvis impersonator Brian Martin

I love to cover all sorts of news on Elvis impersonators - like this article from the Hartford Advocate which says:

"Appropriately attired in a white jumpsuit, Martin as Elvis was phenomenal and sounded great. He was a one-man show, working the sound system and adjusting disco lights in between belting out favorites from "Hound Dog" to "Unchained Melody." The dance floor stayed crowded and although enthusiasts hounded him for attention all night, Martin never let his energy level sag. Even when a birthday cake arrived at the table behind us and we overheard him incredulously ask, "Another one?" as he left the stage to serenade the recipient."

What a great wrap for Brian - a true professional no doubt!

"If Mood2’s application for a wedding license is successful customers will be able to get married in the club – by an Elvis impersonator.

“We’re going to have a little white chapel built upstairs for our Vegas Baby Fridays,” says Mood2’s new manager Andy Millichamp.

“Couples will be able to get married by an Elvis impersonator who will be an ordained chaplain. If they arrange it in advance it will be legally binding. There’ll also be pretend ceremonies.

“We’ll make sure there’s plenty of signage so people know what they’re doing. And we’ll have a no-quibble next day annulment guarantee if they change their minds.”

Elvis impersonators are big in Macau

This is quite a long but interesting article that may be of interest to Elvis impersonators if they're looking to relocate to Asia. Well, Macau in fact which is the former Portuguese enclave in China.

"Macau’s copies of Vegas imitations are not presented as punchlines of an elaborate joke but as genuine luxury articles. Singapore, which is building up its own nest of casinos, recognized the danger. It insisted that the proposals for its two casino resorts be original designs and specifically prohibited imitations of other destinations."

Elvis impersonator goes for world record

Canada's Suresh Joachim is attempting to break the Guinness world record for non-stop Elvis impersonation at a shopping mall.

This is one positive thinking guy and it's all for a good cause.

"At 8 a.m. yesterday in Brampton's Shoppers World mall, Joachim, wearing a white suit with black and gold trim, an extravagant wig and sunglasses, launched into "Heartbreak Hotel." He hopes to keep going until 3 p.m. tomorrow, a total of 55 hours, shattering the existing record of 43 hours, 11 minutes."

According to the rules, Joachim has a time limit in which to sing each song.

"Trying to learn them has been the most difficult part," he said in a phone interview before his marathon. "
